Tuesday 28th January

One of my closest friends who is an avid traveler herself, recently arrived home from a year long stint abroad. Because I'm overseas, I've been getting messages that pretty consistently comprise of either one of the two following messages;

"I hate you"/"I'm jealous"

or

"AAHHH how is Japan!"

So I guess it's safe to assume she's vicariously living through me since arriving back home. Anyway, my point is that, she demanded that I get a photo of me in the middle of Tokyo. So that's just what I did. Specifically at the busiest pedestrian crossing at the world, might I add. Taking photos in public is getting easier, though it's still really damn difficult.

26/365

Monday 27th January! Day 26. I spent most of my day wandering (and hiking) around Miyajima island, said to be one of the top three scenic spots in Japan. It really was something else.

Didn't have a lot of time to get a real shoot done on the 25th (for day 24) hence the lack of blogpost. Though, on Sunday the 26th I arrived in Hiroshima and immediately made my way to the site of the atom bomb. Honestly it was a pretty emotional afternoon and after spending a couple of hours wandering around I went home and curled up in bed, pretty angry at the world. These shots were taken across the river in front of the A-bomb dome - which was destroyed but somehow left standing when the first atom bomb used (other than in test conditions) went off. It stands because the bomb went off almost directly above it, some 600 metres in the air. When it went off, temperatures on the earth surrounding it rose to 3000 degrees celcius, killing everybody outside almost immediately. Some 140,000 people died because of the bomb from the time it went off the the end of the year (some five months). It was really moving to see all this, especially having already seen Pearl Harbour a few years ago.

25/365. Thought I'd do something different with a square crop for a change.

I had this whole idea in my head for how today's 365 would look and alas, it hasn't turned out how I wanted it to. I guess that's what happens when you're dealing with wild animals!

Thursday January 23rd!

Made my way to Nara today, from Kyoto. Not before shooting on the roof of my hostel though, and checking out Fushimi Inari Shrine (which I do recommend).

21/365

I really wish I had more time here in Japan, I'd spend a lot more time here in Kyoto and dedicate time to wandering without a destination. There's so much here and there have been several times just in the 24 hours I've been here that I have stumbled upon temples and shrines without looking for them. Simply, if you ever get the chance to come here, do.

When planning to come to Japan, I think I was most excited about going to these bamboo groves. It's funny because yeah, they are beautiful, and yeah, if you're in the area, they're worth a visit in passing. But they're hardly a destination. But given that I'm working on this 365, I could only see potential. Here's how that potential followed through...

I have found myself in Kyoto! Caught the Shinkansen this morning and spent my afternoon wandering around Kyoto pretty aimlessly. Should really be spending more time in Kyoto, there's so much to see. Stumbled upon this little beauty on my way out to get dinner.

Day 19/365

TOKYOOOOO! You are beautiful and I'm sad to leave you tomorrow. However I'll be back in just over a week. Missing you until then.

14/365

Two weeks strong! Fifty to go, not that that's at all daunting or anything.
I pass buy a bunch of vacant apartments (completed and under construction) on the bus on the way home from work, so figured I'd check some out tonight. I got a wee bit distracted by a different backdrop though, as you can tell. There's more apartments to check out in the future so I'll no doubt be visiting the area again.

This is something closer to the original concept, which I'll explore again later on.

I ventured out tonight but it was so cold I did a lap of the block and came home. This is in the stairwell between floors of my building.
